Fashion Trends I Have Never Understood!

24th January 2019

Hey everyone!

So we’re talking fashion trends today. I realised that on this blog I talk a lot about things that I like but never about things that I don’t so that is changing today. This may be will be a bit of a controversial post as I’m sure there are going to be plenty of people that feel personally attacked as I don’t like something that they wear.

I just want to say that these points are not aimed at anyone in particular. They are opinions I’ve made over a long period of time after viewing the items and many styles of them. Also, as an alternative girl I’m MORE than used to people looking at my hair/tattoos/the clothes I wear and thinking/saying ‘what the f***’ so we’re good. One of my recent items being my skull bag, certain members of my family have made it clear they think I’m an idiot for liking it. But really, who cares. I like it and I’m the one who has to wear it so it doesn’t matter. I also know for a fact there are loads of people who despise the current animal print trend, I personally love it but it’s cool if you don’t. Anyway, onto my fashion peeves!

Fashion Trends I’ve Never Understood

Bucket Hats

Why anyone would ever want to wear one of these is beyond me. Are you going fishing? Did you borrow your granddads hat? WHY? I’d rather walk around having cracked an egg on my head, I just really don’t understand… help.

Low Rise Jeans

These scream early noughties and I admit some people can really pull them off but if you’ve got even a hint of excess fat on your hips (much like myself), they end up making your body look the weirdest shape. Also it seems to be the ongoing trend currently that almost every upper body item sold is cropped, not so bad if you’re wearing high waisted clothing but possible belly flashing trouble if you decide to go low rise. But I mean if that’s your thing, go for it.

Anything Peplum

This trend was SO popular at one point. I literally don’t get it at all?? So you’ve got a top or a dress and then there’s just a random bit of flowy fabric sewn round it by your belly button? What does that add or do to the outfit? It just looks odd as hell to me.

Anything Neon

I hate it. It just reminds me of either the 80s or being 11 and wearing those weird neon leg warmers and tutus to birthday parties or to pose in Bebo pictures. I keep seeing it pop up in the form of puffer jackets recently and I’m really failing to understand why anyone would wear that let alone pay actual money for it. Which actually brings me on nicely to my next item…

Puffer Jackets

Just, what?? Who thought these were a good idea? To be fair, I have seen a few people that can really pull these jackets off. Whenever I look at them or imagine one on myself though I just think every day life jacket? Perks: no chance of spontaneous drowning.

Heeled Dr Martens/Converse

Why? What did these shoes ever do to you? I’ve actually honestly never seen anyone wear these in real life so I do wonder if they even sell. They were perfectly fabulous without heels, LEAVE THEM ALONE, they look ridiculous.

Tshirts Over Hoodies

I’m not sure how many people will know about this but there was a phase in the hardcore/emo music scene where everyone decided to start buying t-shirts in bigger sizes than their already ginormous hoodies and then wearing them over the top? The tshirts were short sleeved and then the hoodies long sleeves used to come out underneath them. Very odd time.

Trainers That Look Like Moon Boots/Space Shoes

Honestly, I recently walked in Size and didn’t like one pair of trainers I saw. What on earth happened to a classic pair of comfy black and white trainers? They’re now all 5 different colours with alien soles, weird flicks, waves and velcro straps on them. I’m confused, I’m really not down with the kids anymore.

That’s all I can think of for now but I’m sure there are plenty others that I consider fashion suicide. I’m fully ready to be roasted by other people for my own fashion choices, oops. Would you be interested in reading what I think are beauty trend disasters?

What would you say are fashion trends you’ve never got on board with? Are you a fan of any that I dislike?

LOVE this. I laughed out loud a couple of times! I didn’t know that t-shirts over hoodies were ever a thing?! That’s horrible?! Why would people do that?! Also low rise jeans were bad for everyone without a perfectly flat stomach so I wouldn’t have survived. I have to admit, I’m not a fan of the current animal print trend, but snake print has grown on me and I’m really a fan of the people that can make animal print work in general.

Haha I’m glad!! Yeah it was really very odd… Yeah I know quite a few people who can’t bring themselves to get into animal print at all! Xx

LOVE THIS. I agree with every single one of these. I don’t care how thin you are, peplum makes you look huge. Puffer jackets look good on no one and anything neon just makes my eyes hurt. The only thing I would say is that at only 5ft I’d take a heeled anything any day so would probably wear a heeled Doc if Docs were my style x

Hahaha I’m so glad! I just don’t really understand why any of them made it out of the planning stages… Honestly, have you seen heeled Docs? They’re so awful… x

  3. I honestly struggle every morning to pick out an outfit that is flattering to a more curvy body – this post made me smile! 💕

    • blacktulipbeauty says:

It can definitely be difficult but I’ve learnt to just wear what I feel comfortable in! I’m glad you enjoyed it 😊

Hahah bucket hats! I’ve sctually not long ordered one and I can’t figure out if I like it or not! I think I will end up sending it back, I like them on girls but not on boys! I don’t think there is anything worse than low rise jeans. I don’t know how I feel about the neon I would NEVER wear it but I think it looks nice on some people! Gotta disagree with you though because puffer jackets are life💖 haha!! I saw someone on Instagram do the t-shirt over the jumper and not sure how I feel about it, it doesn’t look comfy at all-it’s just for fashion ain’t it! I really don’t like low rise converse, I don’t know why because I love low Vans! Great post! Xx

    • blacktulipbeauty says:

I’ve just never been able to get into them at all! Yeah it’s really odd, I don’t know why you’d put a tshirt over outerwear?! IT DOESN’T LOOK GOOD hahah xx

  5. Now this is my kinda post – I think I need to do a new one for 2019 😂😂
I must say I do love a peplum, but 1000% agree with the whole ugly trainer thing – what in the fuck is going on with these monstrosities? Also with you on the heeled Converse and DM’s – who buys this junk?’ 😂
I’d LOVE to see a beauty one – I’m sure you’ve got some opinions about my sorry excuse for a makeup collection 😉❤️❤️

    • blacktulipbeauty says:

Hehe I’m very glad! I KNOW RIGHT, they look so odd!! They’re like spaceships on your feet?? Hehe okay well I’ll get thinking of what beauty trends I have never got! Gal your makeup looks gorge! Xx

it is good that you’re expanding your topics! It’s okay to have opinions, you’re just sharing what you wouldn’t wear because it doesn’t align with your style. Family members love to hate on each other. You rock the skulls, keep doing it if it makes you happy! Oh man, I wish I can rock high-waisted pants but hate how it looks when I sit @__@. I am so in love with your fur coat by the way!

Oooh, I can totally relate with you about the puffer jackets. NOT MY THING! But I always love it when people can rock these looks. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about these trends.

Definitely! I’m glad you understand 😊 Thank you ❤️ Yeah definitely, I respect it when people can pull it off! X

  7. Alice says:

I literally agree with every single one of these, apart from the peplum as I do feel like they’re quite flattering on my figure as they go in at the waist. The flashback to the neon Bebo pictures is so relatable, I used to absolutely love wearing neon legwarmers and I used to keep loads of neon hair bobbles on my wrists too because I was incredibly cool. I can’t even imagine the muffin top that low-rise jeans would create for me, I’m very much a high-waisted kind of girl. I must say that I don’t get all of these trainer trends, there’s so many ugly designs out there and I miss the plain, simple style trainers if I’m honest x

    • blacktulipbeauty says:

I definitely think they suit curvy ladies more, my mum used to wear them and they looked nice on her! Hahah I KNOW, I miss those days but would never go back… Hahaha oh lord I know, it’s embarrassing! Me too, I only own black and black and white trainers! X

  8. Absolutely love this post Alice! Also, if anyone takes it personally then they should SERIOUSLY consider taking themselves off of the internet haha.. Those bucket hats are literally disgusting and they are fishing hats!! Neon is also vile and heeled converse are the actual devil – EW! I liked this fun post 🙂 xo

HAHAHA! I absolutely loved reading this post, one thing I hate is healed Doc’s or Converse. However I do love them in platforms! I also hate neon, anything. I can totally see why it takes you back to the Bebo days – it does the same for me!

Hehe thank you! Yeah I can’t stand them either, I have two pairs of platforms and they’re the best!! Xx
