Boxing Day: The Makeup Challenge With The Palmers!

13th January 2019

Hey everyone!

I’m trying to catch up with the posts I would’ve wrote/uploaded during the end of December had I not taken a break so a few might seem like they’re being uploaded a tad late. But if we’re being honest, as long as they’re worth reading, no one really cares.

Todays post is all about “The Makeup Challenge” we did on Boxing Day at Jakes. It was brilliant, hilarious and slightly terrifying. This won’t be a very text-heavy post but there will be quite a few photos for you to feast your eyes on and hey why not decide who YOU think should win?

A Backstory & The Makeup Challenge Rules

It’s been a good few years now since I properly engulfed myself in all things beauty. I worked, lived and breathed it at one point which brought me to starting up this blog. My first post went live in January 2017 but to be honest my first few posts weren’t too great and I didn’t put that much effort into them or join in with the community – so I consider my blog to have really started when I went self-hosted in August 2017. Jake’s family started to read my posts and enjoy them, the beauty ones were especially a hit with Jake’s dad, Andrew!

As a result, Andrew has ended up using more skincare and secretly itching to get his hands on some makeup to try it out for himself. From this was born: The Makeup Challenge. The idea was that everyone paired up (Jake has 3 siblings, so with his parents it matched perfectly at 6 people) and made each other up. I was of course the judge, the photographer and the person that oversaw the competition. Now, embarrassingly I had enough makeup that I wanted to get rid of to facilitate the challenge, so no money or resources were really wasted for this game.

As Jake has two make-up wearing sisters in their twenties, you’d think they’d have an unfair advantage. But I think some are mistaken as applying makeup to yourself and to others are two completely different talents. Once you’ve studied and practised with your own face, it’s quite easy to apply it every day. Whereas, as a makeup artist, you’re dealing with different skin tones and types, face shapes, eye shapes and colours, lip shapes and colours, brows etc so it’s much harder to be able to know what suits every one. For example, put a brown lipstick on me and I look like I’ve just wolfed down a mars bar. It looks absolutely wonderful on other people, though.

Round One

We decided to start with the men applying to the ladies.
  1. Boudica 2018

This is Isaacs look on Gill. We all thought it was very tribal and partly Picasso-like. A very striking look and possibly something you’d see in an editorial shoot?! Definitely very individual.
  1. Aquarius

This is Jakes look on Vic. As you’ve probably seen from my multiple “My Boyfriend Does My Makeup” posts (here, here and here) Jake doesn’t go for subtle. Without the blue hues, this would definitely be more of a wearable look but with the added… lets call it creativity? She definitely looks like some sort of mermaid.
  1. Jingle Belle

This is Andrews look on Milly. We thought this was clearly the most “wearable” look of the three. Although it’s a little amateur and colourful, you definitely wouldn’t take much notice if you saw her walking down the street as you would with the other two!

Round Two

Now for the ladies to bring their vision to life.
  1. Cosmic Space Oddity

This is Gills look on Isaac. The vibes that we felt for this look were very Bowie and funky. It also kind of reminded me of the “Dark Side Of The Moon” album cover with different colours. Definitely something that wouldn’t be out of place at a festival or rave!
  1. Vintage Glamour

This is Vics look on Jake. I actually thought this wasn’t bad at all and is the most wearable in this round! And doesn’t the lipstick weirdly suit Jake? Could he possibly pass as a woman looking like this…?
  1. Andrea Angel

This is Millys look on Andrew. We were sure Andrew was going to be made into some sort of drag queen – it was a real shame we didn’t have a wig to finish the look, though! The hat and pose really gives it an extra something. Dame Ednas’ new BFF.

SO what is your favourite look? Do you have a clear winner? I didn’t end up picking one as we thought every one had themed their looks very differently, so it wasn’t fair to pick one clear winner!

Would you and your family play The Makeup Challenge?

  1. This is such an amazing idea especially to do over Christmas, I’m sure you had lots of laughs while doing this! All of the looks are so good but I don’t think I could pick a winner either!

  2. This is such a cute idea OMG I love it! What a cute family game <3 (also my money’s on Milly and Andrew)

  3. It really looks like you all had a wonderful fun time and made some great memories. Looks like some of you have a hidden talent too lol, great blog post! 🌸💜

I LOVE this. It sounds like such a fun game. Also I’ve planned to sort through my old/ unwanted makeup next week and I’m dreading it. Anyway, I know his look was wearable, but Jake’s dad is surprisingly good at makeup for someone who doesn’t use it??? You’re right, the red lipstick does suit him as well. I’d love to get my family to do something like this but I don’t think I could get them on board x

  5. Andrea Angel has got to be my winner 😂 I love this post and getting the whole family involved sounds like so much fun! My father in law’s always asking about my blog (or why I pose in a certain way for my Instagram snaps 😂) and my Dad loves playing photographer if Aaron can’t be bothered, so I think it’s something they’d enjoy! Great post as always and loads of fun! 😘😘❤️❤️

I genuinely really want to steal this idea to do at my family parties, it would be hilarious! I’d love to see what Jesse looks like with a properly done face of make-up. You’re right, the red lipstick does weirdly suit Jake, but I’m loving the David Bowie vibes on the look that Gill did. Andrew is surprisingly decent at make-up! I got Jesse to try and do my make-up before and he did surprisingly well haha x

  7. ooooh this is such a great and fun idea! It must have been so much fun! I should do that with my brothers. We are five kids! That would be so much fun! I can already see the crazy makeup looks we could get!

  8. Nancy says:

I am always amazed to see people’s makeup haul – there are so many different products out there. It is cool that you guys had a makeup challenge game going on. I like how everyone’s makeup looks turned out. It looks pretty exciting and a great way to get some creativity out. Glad everyone had fun!

    Nancy ♥

  9. Miranda says:

This gave me such a laugh – Andrew has to win for the poses 🙂

  10. Oh I love this, Andrew is giving me life! 😂 Seems like you all had a fum evening. I’d be so terrible at this as I can barely do my own make up, nevermind anyone elses 🙈 Best look for me would have to be Milly’s Jingle Belle as you’re right, it’s definitely the most wearable – not sure I’d be brave enough to go outside wearing the others!

  11. Julia says:

I LOVE this!! It’s such a fun game to play, especially over christmas, looks like you all had a very fun evening. I agree about all the looks having their own distinctive theme and I think I would struggle to pick a winner too, although Andrew’s poses did really make me laugh! It’s such a great way to get creativity out and to use up old unwanted make up too, I love this idea so much! May have to suggest it to my own family!

This is such an amazing post and I absolutely loved the skill variety here! The cosmic one is my favourite; and the poses here are fab! Great post gal x

I have to vote Jingle Belle- I love the festive name! What a brilliant and unique way to spend some family time- your extended family definitely has some good sports, there’s no way I’d get any of the guys in my family to get involved with something like this, but it looks like you all had so much fun!

    Soph – x

  15. Ah this is so fun! Jake is actually not bad at applying makeup at all!? I love all the photos and it sounds like you had a great Boxing Day 🙂 xo
